Indirect questions

  • When asking questions, it is often more polite to use an indirect form.

What time will you arrive? (indirect)
Do you know what time you will arrive? ( Indirect)

  • What do you notice about the word order and use of auxilary verds in indirect questions?

Do you have any idea how long it takes?
I was wandering if you couid arrange a bottle of champagne.
Could you tell me how many people there are in the group?

  • We can aiso use a past tense to make a question less direct:

How much did you want to pay, sir? (= how much do you)
